Ingredients
For the Beef Patties
- 500 g ground/minced beef, preferably 15–20% fat
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
For the Avocado Burgers
- 4 burger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 4 lettuce leaves
- ½ red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp fresh lime or lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Burger Sauce
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
1. Prepare the Avocado
Cut the avocados in half and remove the stones. Scoop the flesh into a bowl and roughly mash it with a fork.
Add the lime or lemon juice and a small pinch of salt and black pepper. Mix gently and set aside.
2. Make the Beef Patties
Divide the beef into four equal portions and gently shape each one into a burger patty.
Make the patties slightly wider than the buns because they will shrink a little during cooking.
Season both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.
3. Cook the Burgers
Heat a heavy frying pan, cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
Add the vegetable oil and place the patties in the hot pan.
Cook until well browned on the first side, then flip and continue cooking until the burgers are cooked to a safe internal temperature for minced beef according to your local food-safety guidance.
4. Melt the Cheese
Place one slice of cheddar on each beef patty during the final minute or two of cooking.
Allow the cheese to soften and melt over the hot beef.
5. Make the Burger Sauce
Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and garlic powder in a small bowl until smooth.
6. Toast the Buns
Slice the burger buns and place them cut-side down in a dry pan or on the griddle.
Toast briefly until lightly golden.
Assemble the Avocado Beef Burgers
Spread burger sauce over the bottom half of each toasted bun.
Add lettuce, followed by the cheesy beef patty.
Top with tomato, red onion and a generous spoonful of mashed avocado.
Finish with the top bun and serve immediately.
Tips for the Best Avocado Beef Burger
Choose an avocado that gives slightly when gently pressed. It should be ripe and creamy without being excessively soft.
Adding a little lime or lemon juice gives the avocado extra freshness and helps slow browning.
For juicy burgers, use ground beef containing some fat and avoid repeatedly pressing the patties with your spatula while they cook.
Toast the buns just before assembling the burgers so they’re warm and less likely to become soggy.
What to Serve With an Avocado Beef Burger
Try serving your burgers with crispy fries, sweet potato wedges, onion rings, coleslaw or a simple green salad.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use sliced avocado instead?
Yes. Instead of mashing the avocado, cut it into thin slices and arrange them over the cooked beef patty.
What cheese goes well with avocado and beef?
Cheddar works particularly well, but Monterey Jack, pepper Jack or another good melting cheese can also complement the avocado.
Can I make it spicy?
Yes. Add sliced jalapeños, chilli sauce or a little hot sauce to the burger sauce.
Do I need egg or breadcrumbs in the beef?
No. Ground beef can be formed directly into patties without adding egg or breadcrumbs.
